A Big Brother Set of Guidelines

Sing "I Want to Hold Your Hand" to her.
Play Apple Shmear with them, even though Mom said no.
Keep him from hitting him.
Don’t forget to bring back plenty of souvenirs.

Lift her up to put the star on.
Antagonize them all equally.
Antagonize him a bit extra.
Don’t forget to turn on scary movies late at night.

Drive so fast that she'll tell Dad on you.
Take a break from them, but never for too long.
Go get him when he runs away.
Don’t forget to bring up all of the embarrassing stories.

Tickle her until she cries.
Give them the banana Runts that you hate so much.
Never turn down a game of basketball with him.
Don’t forget to call on all of their birthdays.

Threaten him (just a little) after he takes her out.
Avoid their friends so you stay cool.
Don’t let him pull a prank without you.
Don’t let them forget where they came from.

  1. This free-verse poem isn't necessarily about *one* of my brothers. Rather, it's about all of them, and it's about how they shaped their younger siblings. There's a bit of all five of them in here, and sometimes, they were on the receiving end of the gesture as well as the giving. I'm constantly thankful for their dedication to our family. If you have older brothers, you can likely think of your own "set of guidelines" that looks much like this in general, but has unique examples mixed in.

  2. I pulled and edited these images from PicsArt. The basketball hoop background reminded me very much of the set that was in our old neighborhood.
