Confessions II

Dear Dad,
You said no more pets,
but you raised your children
to think of others
before themselves.
So, believe me when I say:
in our own way,
we were obeying you
when we took the food out
into the woods
to give to the mother and her kitten.
Them both showing up
on your porch the next day
was an unintended side effect.
We hope you’re enjoying
your lifelong pals.

  1. I can't even count the number of stray animals we took in as a family, even if only for a short amount of time. There were loads of cats, a dog, a rabbit, baby bunnies whose mother met an unfortunate end, abandoned duck eggs, flightless birds, and baby turtles. Animals were something we all agreed upon; any time we found one, we would band together in sympathy for the lost soul and convince our parents to keep it. After all, there were nine of us kids and only two parents.

  2. This is a picture of my cat, Idella, from when I was in ninth grade. She became unexpectedly pregnant before we could get her spayed, so we had four (very adorable and fluffy) kittens. We gave three of them away, but we ended up keeping one that was particularly disfigured. The photo was edited by me using PicsArt.
